CHAPTER IV

Salazar

Just look at her, leaning against her locker and talking to Josephine Norman as if I’m not even across the hall. Just a few days ago she would steal glances to get an idea of what I thought or felt. I was the king of her heart and, if I hadn’t had to put up a tough front to get what I wanted from Zenobia and the other weak links in my people’s midst, I would have gladly given her what she wanted—confirmation of my still burning desire for her.

Now I’m the one who’s left wondering. Is this payback, her giving me the cold shoulder, or has she really lost her interest? Has she fallen out of thrall with me, feeling the connection to Corvin? I narrow my eyes as I watch her, doubting it. If he were out there, the others would have felt him by now. I would have felt him. But there’s been no increase in anyone’s powers, and the throttled channels that feed us have stayed throttled. Lachlan’s energy in the woods is growing fast. He’s most probably upped his game since he couldn’t finish us at the caves, and soon, everybody’s gonna feel it.

Fact is, Corvin is nowhere close, and there isn’t much time left. I’ll have to turn to plan B to take care of the problem, and Neveah can’t play any part in it. Neither can her friends. I will have to rely on Sinai, which I don’t like one fucking bit, but it’s the best way to do this.

Yet until I put that plan into action, I’ll take from life one last guilty pleasure.

I wait for Neveah to head to class with her friends, and follow her. She left me to deal with my own lust last time, relying on the big fat chance that she was Corvin’s fated mate to keep me compliant. Unfortunately for her, I don’t give a shit whether she’s the king’s fated mate or not anymore. Not considering what I’m about to do after I take her one last time.

I stalk her to her next class, but I don’t remain inconspicuous. I’m not short of my own stalkers in this academy, and now there’s one particularly nasty one following me.

“What are you doing?” Zenobia calls as she hurries after me, her fairy followers scurrying after her. This repeat scene has become tedious and frankly, ridiculous. “Seniors don’t have Logos Studies,” she says desperately.

I stop in my tracks, breathing in deeply to calm down. Fuck knows I’d like nothing more than to send this woman to fucking hell, but she’s an important piece of Lachlan’s puzzle, so I have to keep her close.

“Zenobia, we have a big battle ahead of us. Please go see the headmistress, she’s going to prepare you and the others for what’s coming at us. The evil from the forest is closing in. Every class we have now is about that, in fact. That’s why I’m going to Logos Studies, I’m doing my part there, preparing the others.
